Old Military Road Edit
Our SS19 Snow Peak Edit takes us onto the old military road leading to Cairn O’Mounth, a historically significant, high (454m) mountain pass.
It served as a military road since Roman times and is probably a prehistoric route dating back to 2000 BC. In the 11th century it was used by Macbeth and his men before his last stand against Malcolm III of Scotland at the battle of Lumphanan in 1057. Edward 1’s English army used it to return to England in 1296 and it was also used by Viscount Dundee’s army during the first Jacobite rising of 1689.
Nowadays it is described as an adventurous road which is often blocked during winter due to snow or flooding.
Along the way we took in the forests and woodlands, a glimpse of a pheasant, the Water of Dye and its old bridge, an area we plan to return to later in the season for more in-depth coverage.
